Mounts for digital photo sizes (info)

Many "point & shoot" digital cameras produce photos with a 1.33:1 (4:3) aspect ratio while most digital SLR cameras generally use the 35mm 1.5:1 aspect ratio. Some cameras allow you to select the ratio of the photos. You can find out the aspect ratio of your digital images by looking at the pixel dimensions. eg 2048 x 1536 pixels would be ratio of 1.33:1

When printing, the ratio of the printing paper doesn't always match the aspect ratio of the photo. Regular photo paper sizes include 6" x 4" (1.5:1 aspect ratio), 7" x 5" (1.4:1), 10" x 8" (1.25:1) and 11" x 8.5" (1.29:1). So when you print your photos to a paper size that has a different ratio, you'll either end up bordering the photo to match the aspect ratio of the paper, or cropping the photo to fit the paper.

If you send your your photos to a commercial photo printer, they will either be automatically bordered (blank or black borders added) or they will be automatically cropped). Some printers use automatic face recognition software to try and help you out, others may do it manually with a mark-one-eyeball, and others will simply crop in relation to the centre of the image.

Problems with automatic cropping may spoil the picture if you have important objects going from edge to edge as they can get taken away during cropping. So, it is best if you can either do your own cropping to send an image that will exactly match the aspect ratio of the paper you intend to have it printed on, or have it printed with borders or to an exact digital size, then specify the correct mount window size

Digital and traditional film photo sizes can be different. You can choose to slightly "crop" (lose a small part of the image on the long side) with digital prints by using standard "near digital" window sizes, or order mounts tailored to fit digital ratios. So you have the choice whether to "crop" your photos (either in your own software or let your digital printing service do it) or keep the full digital ratio.
